What is the best ATV tire for you?

Is the trail calling your name? Before you head out, check your ATV tires. The tires on your all-terrain vehicle are an important part of your ride. If your tires are old or damaged, it is important to get them replaced before you hit the trail. Worn tires can compromise the safety and overall performance of your vehicle.

Here at Hilltop Tire Service, we understand buying tires can be a rather daunting task. Especially if you don’t really know what tire or type of tire you are looking for. Here are a few helpful hints on how to decide what tire is best for you:

What is ply rating? The ply rating tells you the overall strength and durability of the ATV tire. The higher the ply rating, the tougher the tire. You should expect to pay more for a 6 or 7-ply rated tire vs a 2 or 3-ply tire. Most manufacturers list the ply rating on the sidewall of the ATV tire. The ply rating does not always correspond with the number of plies in the tire. Years ago this was true, but modern technology has made it possible for an ATV tire with 3 plies to match the strength of an ATV tire with 6 plies. Ply ratings are still useful in that they are relative to one-another within a brand. So a 6-ply ATV tire today might not have 6 plies but it will still be stronger than a 3-ply ATV tire.

What is a Star Rating?: Stars correspond with an ATV tire's maximum operating tire pressure.

  • 1 Star = 4 PSI
  • 2 Stars = 5 PSI
  • 3 Stars = 7 PSI

Finding the Right Tread: An all-terrain vehicle is meant to get you through rough terrain, as long as you have the correct tires installed. Choose standard A/T tires for general purpose riding, mud tires with a directional tread for riding through mud, sand tires with paddles for beaches and dunes, or racing tires for high-speed trails.

Finding Your Tire Size: The tire size is displayed on the sidewall as height x width-wheel diameter. It's recommended that you stay with the standard size suggested by the manufacturer unless you're looking for certain performance benefits and understand the pros and cons of changing size. Check your owner's manual for more information or give us a call and we can help you determine what size is best for your all-terrain vehicle needs.
