Who Invented the Tire?

Who Invented the Tire?

Ever wonder how the air-filled tires we have come to know as basic standard equipment on our vehicles came about? Long before air was introduced into tires, they were covered in iron, wood, leather, or even solid rubber. These materials didn’t provide a very comfortable ride, but they did provide grip and durability. It took many years to develop the pneumatic or air-filled tires we use today. In 1847, the air-filled tire was patented by Robert Thompson, a Scottish engineer, but unfortunately had little success. In those days, drivers still preferred the durability of solid rubber.

John Boyd Dunlop, of Belfast, Ireland, became the second inventor and manufactured the air-filled tire in 1888. It was designed so his 10-year-son, Jonnie, could ride his bicycle without getting headaches from bumpy roads.

Even though the design was simple, it caught the eye of the public. By this time, bicycles were becoming popular and the pneumatic tire provided a much softer ride. Over the years, there were many changes to little Jonnie’s bike tires. Now air-filled tires are made of synthetic rubber, fabric, and steel cords while experts are constantly changing designs and materials used for durability, and functionality.

The introduction of tire tread was a big game-changer for the tire. These groves and sipes on the surface of the rubber are designed to help your vehicle handle better. Depending on the tread design, some will handle better in hot temperatures, grip the road in snow or ice while others are made for hauling heavy loads.

Who knows what the future may hold for pneumatic tires. With electric and self-driving cars becoming more and more popular, tires and tread designs could change a lot in the coming generations. One thing is certain, Hilltop Tire Service will be here to help you decide what tire is best for your needs. As always, The HTS Way is, HONEST opinions you can TRUST, with your SAFETY in mind.
